La Marelle is one of the most whimsical hideout you can find in Singapore, with bright and bold colours and fairytale-like clouds and raindrops all over its wall. This cafe exudes an artsy feel, as it was specially crafted by an artist who has thoughtfully designed everything, from the logo to the wall art and its menu. They have a good variety of food, drinks and desserts that would easily satisfy your palate.
LOOK & FEEL
From the moment you walk into its stairway, the bright colours would make you feel as though you have entered another world. We were impressed by how intricate the design was. Every single detail came together to form a really nice artpiece.
La Marelle began as an accessories and lifestyle goods designer and retailer, with their first store launched in Takashimaya years ago. Some of their products can be seen on display in this cafe, which are opened to browsing while inside the cafe.
These paper lanterns add on to the romantic feel of the cafe, giving the interior a warm subtle mood.
FOOD & DRINKS
For a start, we had a taste of the drinks. They recently launched their Fruit Teas range, and you get to choose between Green or Red Tea, iced or hot. We had the beautifully named iced red tea, Passion Sunrise. It was fruity as expected, with fresh sliced apple and peach dipped in the tea. A tropical and refreshing drink like this is the best counter to the hot weather we have here.
My friend ordered a Cappucino, which was light and silky. La Marelle has their roastery in Laos, so the beans in this cup came directly from there.
The lunch set was a generous one, which had a complimentary soup and fruit tea to go along. Though this drink was nothing as fancy as the Passion Sunrise, it was equally refreshing and sweet-tasting. I liked the tadpoles topping in the drink, which added to its taste and presentation.
The Mushroom Soup from the lunch set was thick and rich. The wild mushrooms topped it with a nice fragrance.
We had a taste of the Aglio e Olio, which deviates from the usual Aglio we had elsewhere before. The spices are slightly different but extremely fragrant. It came in a generous portion, giving justice to its price.
We love all-day-breakfast, so we ordered Chipolata Set. The scrambled eggs and sausages were good, but the croissant was a tad too dry for our liking. It also came in a huge portion, which was very filling and wholesome. Generally, if each of the components are made well, this mix of sausages, eggs and toast cannot go wrong.
We also ordered a Stuffed French Croissant. It tasted similar to the Chipolata set, as it also had the same combination, just that it was stuffed into the croissant. The salsa chips at the side would have finished the dish well if it was a little more crispy. It was delicious on the whole, and it definitely filled the stomach well.
We fell in love with the beautiful crockery which carried the La Marelle style. The presentation was appetizing and we were full not just in the stomach, but also in the eyes.
Every time I visit La Marelle, I would definitely order its Iced Espresso. It is made from a 500 year old secret recipe, and they would prepare it in front of you. I didn’t ask what the various ingredients was since it was meant to be a secret, but I tasted a tangy ginger flavour. The bitter-sweet combination definitely did not fail to impress, and my perception of espresso definitely changed for the better with this drink. I am not a fan of pure espresso because of its overwhelming bitterness and acidity, but this concoction was sweeter and slightly tangy. I would recommend all coffee lovers to try it, I promise it would be a good experience.
IN A NUTSHELL
Overall, La Marelle really stood out with its intricate and whimsical interior and we would recommend you to experience the lovely ambience for yourself. The portion and taste is reasonable for its price, and the selection of coffee and tea drinks welcomes all. They are usually busy, especially on the weekends, but you could try your luck on weekday afternoons after 2pm to have a comfortable experience. They have power points and free wifi for use, making it a very good place to chill out with your laptop as well.
Special thanks to La Marelle and its friendly staff for hosting us!
