The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen

Malaysia / Johor Bahru

It has become an addiction to visit Johor Bahru once every few months ever since the causeway Neighbourhood has become such a hipster hang out. Just three months from the last visit where we checked out FOC, plenty of new cafes and ice cream shops have opened its door to compete for the favours of the cafehopping crowd.

There are many worth checking out, but there's one that forever remains my favourite because of its super yummy food, and that is The Replacement Lodge and Kitchen.

Interior & Ambience

Firstly, it has a really nice interior that is pleasant to the eyes - white walls, marble tiles, wooden surfaces and potted plants, everything that makes a perfect background for a photograph.

Secondly, the service team is always friendly and willing to help, which makes the experience even better.

Food & Drinks

More than that, the food and coffee are fabulous.

We will never leave this place without gobbling down the Breakfast Platter. I mean, every single element of this platter was just so delicious! The sausage, the toast, the eggs, I have to stop here. And psst it costs 28 bucks.... in ringgit.

Another dish that always left me in awe each time would be the B&B French Toast. Seriously, it is very rare to find food delicious to the extent that it gives an overwhelming sense of happiness, but this is one of them. I don't know how they do it, but the French toast was just so crispy with every bite it crackled, and I wouldn't feel "gelat" finishing the entire dish on my own despite it being fried. The ice cream that went with it is just perfect, and another very important element would be the caramelised banana, sweet and fresh. This will definitely please all sweet toothed patrons.

The coffee is also beyond my expectations. I get a little wary tasting coffee in other countries but The Replacement proved me so wrong. Their blend was really balanced and full bodied with a nice kick. I can't help but get a Piccolo every time I visit.

In Short

The Replacement has got to be one of the best cafes in JB, and I would recommend to make this a stop every time you drop by JB causeway. It's within walking distance from the CitySquare mall so there's no excuses not to go ;)

Faculty of Caffeine

Malaysia / Johor Bahru

image.jpg

Faculty of Caffeine is located just across the straits in Johor Bahru, within walking distance from City Square Mall. This cafe is extremely photogenic, dressed in "dungeon" style with dark coloured interior, quite similar to Ronin in Singapore.

Recently it has been the hip thing to cross the borders over to our beloved Neighbour - Johor Bahru to cafehop.  It is no wonder with such a good exchange rate this days. The price on the menu is the same as in Sg, but in a different currency. Yet, the taste and quality is not any less, hence one will find it more value for money.

Also, with a cafe scene booming fast in JB, avid cafe lovers flock there to discover something unique, hopefully a different experience than what they would usually have in Singapore.

INTERIOR & AMBIENCE

I really like how the natural light from outside contributes to the aesthetic of the cafe, creating powerful shadows and highlights for the picture naturally.

FOOD & DRINKS

We can't resist the temptation of the big breakfast here. As you can see, the portion was substantial and there was nothing to pick on about this dish really. We cleaned off our plates almost immediately.

Out of curiosity, I ordered a Salted Caramel Affogato which is apparently FOC's specialty drink. I would like to believe something went very wrong the day I ordered it. They literally spammed the sea salt and with the saltiness it heightened the bitterness of the espresso and neither the ice cream nor the caramel sauce made it any better. Apart from it looking perfect for the cam, there is no other reason why I would order this again. I did have quite a few mouthfuls though - to figure out why it tasted so strange.

The coffee here was fortunately good though. Maybe it's the right thing to always stick to the basics.

In Short

Overall, FOC was a good experience and the staff was also friendly. If you are up for a shop day trip to JB, don't be afraid to venture out of the mall and pop by this cafe for a nice, affordable cafe experience.
