Luxe Singapore

Situated in The Working Capitol, Luxe is a Sydney based cafe that offers Australian cuisine with a unique Asian twist. Luxe's unpretentious service, awespiring interior and the simply delicious food is summed up by their logo, a big red heart.

Interior & Ambience

Luxe's first touch point with you has got to be their iconic door. The heart shape handle's simplicity and classiness immediately leaves an impression on you.

Inside, you'll be greeted with a modern contemporary design that sets a comfortable ambience for a late brunch with friends. There's also a long brass table bar that will definitely be the limelight when they start serving cocktail at night.

Situated at the corner is their open kitchen and wine cellar. I'm personally a fan of the open kitchen concept. The feeling of being able to see your food prepared before you is simply intriguing, especially when you are a fan of cooking.

Food & Drinks

Having been to Perth, we are no stranger to Australian cuisine. Luxe brings exactly that to Singapore. I ordered the Eggs Benedict Prosciutto Hollandaise and topped it up with sautéed spinach. I always felt that spinach goes well with eggs benedict after having one at a cafe (I forgot which) and I will always add it whenever I have a choice. This dish was done perfectly. The eggs were poached well and the prosciutto accompanying the dish offered better flavor compared to normal ham used in normal eggs benedicts. The slightly acidic hollandaise sauce was also to my liking.

Aussie Breakfast with Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Cumin Roast Tomato, Pork & Fennel Sausages, Avocado, Mushrooms

Aussie Breakfast with Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Cumin Roast Tomato, Pork & Fennel Sausages, Avocado, Mushrooms

A good breakfast platter is getting hard to come by since almost every cafe offers them nowadays. It usually comes in either disappointing portion, bad scrambled eggs, or poorly toasted bread.

We ordered Luxe's Aussie Breakfast to try as we wanted something filling. It came with a generous portion and it was made up of my favorite breakfast wants. It came with good scrambled eggs which was soft, creamy and smooth. The bacon was seared just right without it being too hard. The mushrooms were seasoned perfectly. I guess this is what you call an Aussie Breakfast.

We also ordered the cappuccino which was on point.

Refuel Cafe

Singapore / Bedok

image.jpg

In the quiet neighbourhood of Bedok reservoir, a hidden gem serves the community with good coffee and food. Refuel Cafe is a no frill cafe that offers nothing but a pleasant environment and affordable food.

INTERIOR & AMBIENCE

It's a small shop but has just sufficient space to make its guests feel comfortable. The interior is nicely done up too.

Food & Drinks

I ordered a Fuel Me Up which is Baked Eggs and Meatballs. I must say this was really tasty and I finished every sip of the flavourful tomato base sauce. The serving size was just right to satisfy my hunger, at an affordable price of around $12.

The big breakfast here was also rather satisfying and had a generous portion of every essential ingredient. The scrambled eggs could do better with slightly more seasoning though, but it's fine if one isn't too picky.

The coffee here was fabulous. Loved how much body the Cappucino had and how it was not acidic or bitter.

Afterwit

Singapore / Bugis

Afterwit is a term for the should-have thoughts that comes after a complex scenario, like a quarrel. This cafe, by the same guys from indie Working Title, is a space that inspires afterwit before the complex moment happens. To complement that, they have a periodic table worth of drinks to fuel the inspirations.

Interior & Ambience

It is a compact space with really kickass wall arts. With mainly ambient lights and spot lights, it can be quite dim but sufficient for working on laptop.

Food & Drinks

Out of the whole list of drinks, we wanted to try the bolder options, like Sabai Sabai, a Thai milk tea shake. The description was very alluring, and it was indeed quite an exciting taste for the palate. Unfortunately it didn’t sustain till the end of the drink, something about it was just not right.

Some of the drinks were just replay of the usual and nothing to rave about. At least the coffee here is reliable, taste was mild and balanced.

Chicken Chipolata Croissant

The Chicken Chipolata Croissant was a good bet, crispy, soft and buttery, our taste buds approved. The soft chipolata sausage was a complement.

We also had the Brunch Burrito. The skin wrap of this burrito had a special taste – like a book, don’t ask us how, but it did, and we are not sure if people would appreciate this taste. Thankfully the things in there were quite tasty.

We might have too many Eggs Benedict in our lifetime, but it didn’t hurt to get one more. The Brioche was the highlight, soft and crispy. However we noted the chosen ham was rather tasteless and the eggs were slightly undercooked. Probably a ham that is saltier will work better and the consistency for the eggs had to be better supervised.

The Spicy Honey Wings turned out to be a simple fare, might not be value for money to some but the taste was fine.

I especially loved the Mussels Marinara for its tomato sauce, I was literally drinking out if the bowl. However the mussels that day were not the freshest and relied heavily on the sauce to mask the fishy taste.

In Short

Just weeks into its operations, we were lucky to have an early preview of their potential. Some hits and misses at their start but the food should be fine tuned in time to come. If you are in the area of Kampong Glam and is tired of the same few cafe hunts, try this for a change.

Thank you Afterwit for hosting us.
