About Roland Restaurant in Singapore
Roland Restaurant, located in Singapore, has a long history dating back to the 1950s when it was just a seaside stall called Palm Beach along Upper Changi Road. Mdm Cher Yam Tian, the founder, would prepare Teochew-style steamed crabs for her husband, who one day requested something different. Mdm Cher stir-fried the crabs in tomato sauce, and later added some chilli to the mix to spice it up. This dish became known as chili crab and is now a famous Singaporean dish.
Roland Lim, the owner of the eponymous restaurant, recalls that the dish was the brainchild of his mother, Cher Yam Tian, who was experimenting with more adventurous ways to cook crabs in the 1950s.
The restaurant was relocated to Bedok Beach along Upper East Coast Road as the number of seafood lovers grew. In 1985, their son Roland took over the family business and the restaurant was renamed Roland Restaurant. The restaurant has been recognized as a Michelin-recommended restaurant and is known as the birthplace of Singapore’s chili crab.
